JTM makes use of the Neutron moisture hydroprobes to asses the ground water content of the soil profile, by monitoring the available plant water in the effective root zone on a weekly basis. All data is processed through a software analytics program which calculate and present an irrigation schedule (recommendation), a water balance graph (resulting from the effective root zone) and depth graph indicating the ground water status down to depths of 2m.

The software is also able to run simulation projection models incorporating weather, rain and irrigation data. These simulations are then compared with the actual ground water measured. The parameters in these simulations, that are used for the initial setup, are then adjusted for each specific field on the farm. In monitoring these fields on a weekly basis, only then are we able to quantify and manage efficiently, thus avoiding waste.

Hydroprobe soil moisture measurements

The Neutron moisture probe, accurately measures the sub-surface moisture in soil and other materials by use of a probe containing a source of high energy neutrons and a slow (thermal) neutron detector. The probe is lowered into a pre-drilled and cased hole (50mm in diameter).

Hydrogen as present in the water in the soil slows the neutrons down for detections. The moisture data is displayed directly in units of interest on a surface electronic assembly which is integral to the source shield assembly.

This instrument offers a simple to operate but superior alternative to other methods of soil moisture monitoring. The Hyrdoprobe is an industry standard in soil management. It is the ultimate aid in irrigation scheduling.

Although JTM’s primary focus within the agricultural community is based on utilising the Neutron moisture hydroprobe for groundwater monitoring, where each field is measured and scouted on a weekly basis in person, JTM also extends their services by supplying alternative groundwater probes, also known as “continuous logging probes” that are permanently installed in the field and monitor data at predetermined intervals. The necessary agronomical support is also provided. Tensiometers can also be provided and maintained if required. Custom soil drills (augers) are also available on request.

The Sub-Surface probe (continuous water level indication probes) is a capacitance-based soil moisture and soil temperature monitoring device. The Sub-Surface probe requires an external logger or remote transmission unit and external power supply.

Some of the soil moisture probes are equipped with on-board memory and a battery pack. Data sampling can be set at intervals of 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Battery life of up to 12-18 months can be expected. The data can be uploaded using the wireless hand logger if not transmitted over a network.
